DETAILS
UK advanced materials company Elethron has begun building initial crystal-growth capability for a 2-inch single-crystal aluminium nitride (AlN) wafer platform. The facility is intended to support small-batch production of substrates for thermal management and packaging applications.
The planned platform targets applications in ultra-wide-bandgap semiconductors, high-power electronics and deep-ultraviolet optoelectronics. It is also intended to complement manufacturing capacity for critical advanced semiconductor materials in the European supply chain.

The immediate development is the start of capability building, not the availability of finished substrates. Small-batch production could provide a route to supplying material for specialised applications, but its effect on the wider supply chain will depend on how the platform progresses from initial crystal growth to usable wafers.
For potential users, subsequent details on wafer quality, production capacity and availability will help clarify where the platform can be used and how much it may contribute to the supply of advanced semiconductor materials.
